Some of the attraction is the simplicity of the instrument. The soprano and concert sizes may look like toys to most newcomers. Having only 4 strings makes them far less intimidating than almost any other stringed instrument. For those unfamiliar with ukuleles the bar is set pretty low when it comes to the performance of these instruments. People who don’t consider themselves musically inclined will still pick up a ukulele. Also, people are pleasantly surprised to discover the sophisticated musical possibilities ukuleles present.

People play ukuleles for a variety of reason. Some choose it as an alternative instrument to the pricey guitar. Others are amazed at the tonal quality and ease of playing. Some choose to purchase the ukulele as a collector’s item. While others purchase the ukulele as a souvenir from a vacation trip to Hawaii or some far distant south pacific island (rather than buying it at some expensive souvenir shop). Whatever your reason, you will be amazed at the sheer enjoyment of playing this instrument.
Here are some other reasons:
- It is easy to learn.
- It's small, cute, portable and fun!
- It makes a happy sound.
- It makes you and people around you happy.
- It's a new hope for people who always wanted to learn how to play a stringed instrument but didn't.
- It is an excellent way to learn about music and music theory.
- It's smaller than a guitar so it's easier for kids as well as adults to play.
- It's affordable.
- It's small so that means you can collect more because it takes up less space!
- People who play the ukulele are generally happier people.

The Soprano, or standard size, is the smallest and has the tone that is typically associated with ukuleles. The Soprano is the one often given to novices who are interested in learning to play the ukulele. It is usually tuned to G-C-E-A.
The Concert is sometimes referred to as the alto ukulele. It was developed having a slightly larger size than the soprano and is usually a little louder and has a deeper tone. It is tuned in the same as the soprano ukulele. Since it is larger than the soprano, it is ideal for people with larger hands.
The Tenor was developed afterwards having a deeper bass tone than the concert ukulele and is larger than the concert ukulele. The tenor is
often used when playing complicated classical or jazz pieces where "solo" chord playing and individual strings are plucked.
The Baritone is the largest of the ukuleles and resembles a mini-guitar but with a narrow fingerboard. It can even be tuned like a guitar
and has the deepest tone.

Measured in inches the Soprano at 21", then the Concert at 23", next is the Tenor at 26" and finally the Baritone at 30".

The ukulele can be tuned in several keys, but the must popular tunings is: G C E A as shown in the picture below. Did you know that the ukulele is unusual among string instruments in that the strings are not tuned in order of pitch. Watch out for this!

For over 5 decades, Gotoh pronounced “GO-TOE” has been the finest quality manufacture of tuning gears, friction peg tuners, machine heads and other
parts providing to the music industry. Gotoh tuners feel very smooth and precise. There is no slack or wobble and the tuning stability is gone. Sustain and overall string response is improved. Gotoh tuners are very well known in the industry and by others who are involved in music.
Good quality strings can make a big difference to the sound of your instrument. Aquila strings are one of the most popular brands of ukulele strings around, if not the most popular. They are made in Italy of their own, special Nylgut material. Nylgut is a synthetic material that is intended to combine the best qualities of nylon and gut strings (hence the name). The strings are easy to play and have a warm tone to them and are highly recommend for any non-metal string instrument. These strings (along with blacknylon) usually improve the tone and give more volume on most ukuleles. Aquila strings make even the most inexpensive ukulele sound much better and are typically much easier for a beginner to play.
The Limited Series and the Koa Solid Series features the Gotoh friction peg tuners and Aquila strings.
